My research and scholarly contributions have received international and national award recognition. In 2019, I was awarded the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) Early-in-Career Award. The SSSI is an “international professional organization of scholars interested in the study of a wide range of social issues with an emphasis on identity, everyday practice, and language.” This SSSI Award “specifically honors those scholars who have made significant contributions within the first ten years since the completion of their PhDs.” In 2015, the Canadian Families and Corrections Network, Canada’s only national advocacy and resource organization for families affected by incarceration, presented me with the Friend of the Family award in recognition of my contributions to research on the effects of crime and incarceration on families.
In 2024, I was named one of two of Wilfrid Laurier University's Research Professors. The annual Laurier award recognizes excellence in research and leadership.
